Ethiopian Aricha Grade 1

from 6.99

Buna (the word in for coffee in the Amharic language [Ethiopian dialect]) was discovered in Ethiopia hundreds of years ago. Coffee plants / trees were then transported to other parts of the world which marked the beginning of global coffee development. It remains a sacred commodity in Ethiopia and coffee roasting is performed daily in homes, essentially, almost every Ethiopian civilian is a coffee roaster or has had exposure to coffee roasting.

Aricha is the name of the washing station where this particular coffee is processed. Idido is the village, or kebele, where this coffee is grown and processed, in a microregion of Yirgacheffe. Aricha is about 8 kilometers from the center of Yirgacheffe Town. The coffee is picked ripe between November and January, depulped within 12 hours, and washed clean with spring water. The soils in this region are red-brown clay soil, about 1.5 meters deep.We have a special relationship with the producers of this Yirgacheffe, which is an exclusive in the UK and not widely available.

This Aricha coffee is harvested at nearly 2200 metres above sea level in the Gediyo zone of the Yirgacheffe district.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is one of the most premium coffees in the world. Upon harvest, It is usually inspected by a panel of adjudicators who decide on the grading, from 1-5 (1 being the highest).

We only stock Grade 1 of this coffee; a grading which ranks this coffee amongst the highest quality coffee on earth.  Cupping results of this Yirgacheffe Aricha have yielded a 93+ cup score, making it one of the top 0.01% of coffees in the world.

Taste notes

Due to the natural dry processing method involved in producing this lot (where berried coffee beans are flat-bed-sun-dried with the skin allowed to eventually hatch and naturally peel/slide off) this coffee is incredibly aromatic and rich. It is a grade 1 meaning extra care has been taken in its preparation and harvest, which has birthed a bold intense fruity character in the cup with notes of mango and peaches. It is sweet and vibrant with a smooth mouth feel, and will leave you mesmerized by its tropical floral, apricot and caramel taste notes.

Bespoke Artisan Hand-Pan-Roasted in the traditional east-African sacred way commonly adhered to in the widely known sacred 'coffee ceremony'.
